Automotive key and lockout work, handled at the car
Car key problems tend to happen at the worst possible time. You close the trunk with the keys inside. A fob dies and the car won't start. You lose your only key and realize a hardware store copy was never going to start the engine anyway. These are the calls we take every day at E-Mobilize Auto Key & Lockout.
We work mobile, so the van comes to wherever the car is parked — a driveway, a parking lot, a roadside. We cut and program keys on site for most makes and models, open locked vehicles without damaging the door, and diagnose ignition problems that leave a car stuck. Not sure what you need? A short phone call usually answers it.
What we handle on a typical automotive call
Every car and key situation is a little different. Here is the work that makes up most of our automotive calls, with a note on when each one comes up.
Car Lockout
Keys locked inside, or a door that simply won't open? We use tools built for opening vehicles through the door seal — no prying the frame, no scratched paint. Once you're back in, we can look at whether a worn lock or a failing fob was the real cause. More on our car lockout service.
Car Key Replacement
Lost every key to the car? We make a new one from scratch — cutting a blade that matches your locks and programming the key to the vehicle's computer so the engine will start. We handle metal keys, transponder keys, and flip keys for most domestic and import vehicles. See our car key replacement page.
Key Fob & Remote Programming
When a remote stops locking the doors or the buttons quit responding, the fix is sometimes a battery and sometimes a new fob that needs pairing to the car. We carry blank fobs for many vehicles and program them on site. Bought a fob online? We can often program that too — ask on the phone before you order.
Transponder & Chip Keys
Most vehicles built after the late 1990s use a chip embedded in the key head that the car has to recognize before the engine will start. A copy cut at a hardware store turns the locks but leaves the engine silent. We cut and code transponder keys so the immobiliser accepts them correctly and the car starts every time.
Push-to-Start & Smart Keys
Proximity fobs let you start the car with the key in your pocket. When one is lost or damaged, the replacement has to be programmed to your exact vehicle — there is no shortcut. We work with smart keys for many newer makes and can add a spare so you are not left with a single fob as your only backup.
Ignition Repair
A key that sticks, won't turn, or feels loose in the ignition usually points to wear in the cylinder or the key itself. Forcing a worn key can make things worse fast. We diagnose whether the problem is the cylinder, the key, or both — and repair or rekey many ignitions on site rather than sending you to a shop. More on ignition repair.
Three steps from stuck to back on the road
Call and describe it
Tell us the year, make, and model, and what's happening. That tells us which key blank, chip, or tool to load before we head out to you.
We meet you at the car
We come to your driveway, your workplace, a parking lot — wherever the vehicle is across the Folsom and Elk Grove area. No tow required.
Cut, programmed, tested
We finish the work on site and verify that every key and remote starts the car and works the locks before we leave.
Serving Folsom, Elk Grove, and the roads in between
E-Mobilize Auto Key & Lockout is based in the Sacramento region and covers a wide stretch of surrounding communities. Most of our automotive calls come from Folsom and Elk Grove, but the van regularly travels to nearby cities and the lots and driveways in between.
We meet drivers wherever the car ended up — grocery store lots, office parks, apartment complexes, or roadside. If your city isn't listed, call and ask, or check our service areas page.
The calls we get most often
You're down to one key
Most drivers only call us after they've already lost a key and the car is down to its last one. Getting a spare made while you still have a working key costs less than starting from scratch, because the car can recognize an existing key and the system has something to copy from. If there are two drivers in the household or you share a vehicle, a backup key is worth doing before you need it. Ask about a spare on your next call.
The remote works but the car won't start
When the door locks respond to the fob but the engine cranks without catching — or does nothing at all — the transponder chip inside the key is usually the issue, not the remote buttons. They are two separate systems inside the same key. We test the chip, and re-pair or replace the key so the car reads it again and starts normally.
A key snapped off in the lock or ignition
Older keys wear thin and brittle. One hard twist on a cold morning can snap the blade clean off inside the lock or the ignition barrel. In most cases we can extract the broken piece without pulling the lock apart, then cut a fresh key from the code or the lock itself. Reaching for pliers before calling often pushes the stub deeper and makes the job harder — it's worth a quick call first.
Dealership price vs. mobile locksmith
Programming a key at a dealership can cost significantly more than the same work done by a mobile locksmith, and it usually requires towing the car in and waiting for a booking slot. We do the same programming on site, at the car, often the same day you call. We'll give you a price on the phone before we come out so you can compare — no tow, no waiting room, no surprises. Our FAQ page covers more common questions.
Answers to what people ask us
Can you make a car key without the original?
Yes. For most vehicles we can cut and program a new key even when every original is gone, using the lock or the vehicle's key code. We'll ask for proof of ownership before we start — registration and a matching ID are the usual documents.
Do you program key fobs and push-to-start smart keys?
We do, for many makes and models. A small number of the newest vehicles require dealer-only equipment, and if yours is one of them we'll tell you on the phone rather than have you wait around. When we can do it, we pair the fob to the car on site before we leave.
What information do you need when I call?
The year, make, and model of the vehicle, and a short description of the problem. For some key types we also need the VIN, which is printed on the dashboard near the windshield and on your registration. That lets us bring the right key blank and chip the first time out.
Can you open my car without damaging it?
That's the goal on every lockout call. We use tools designed to open vehicles through the door seal, which avoids prying the frame or scratching the paint. Older or unusual door designs take a little longer, but the approach is the same on every job.
Is a mobile locksmith cheaper than the dealership for key programming?
In most cases, yes — often significantly. Dealerships charge shop rates and require an appointment. We come to the car and give you a price on the phone before we arrive. There's also no towing cost, since we work at the vehicle's location.
Do you work on all makes and models?
We cover a broad range of domestic and import vehicles. A handful of models require dealer-only programming equipment, and we're upfront about those on the phone so you're not left waiting on something we can't finish.
What are your hours?
We answer calls around the clock, including evenings and weekends. If you reach us at an odd hour, give us the details and we'll let you know what we can do and when we can be there.
How we work with you
A price before we start
You hear the cost on the phone, based on your vehicle and the key type. Work begins only after you say go.
The van comes to you
Home, work, or a parking lot — we bring the cutting and programming gear to the car instead of towing it anywhere.
Honest about the job
If a model needs dealer equipment, we say so on the phone. We'd rather point you the right way than have you wait on something we can't finish.
Tested before we leave
Every key and remote is checked against the locks and ignition before we go. You drive off knowing everything works.
